KAPOK TREE (Ceiba pentandra)
The interior design of Westgate Veterinary Center was inspired by the beauty and the role of the Kapok Tree.
The exotic Kapok Tree (Ceiba pentandra) is a majestic tree of the tropical rainforests. It was originally native to South America. The Kapok Tree can grow to a height of 150 feet or greater, and the diameter of the trunk can reach 9-10 feet! Large thorns on the trunk protect the tree when young, but as it matures, the thorns fall off. At that point, the tree becomes home to a large number of diverse species of animals.
The Kapok Tree is also known as the "Tree of Life," because it provides food, shelter and water to many animals. In the past (and in some cultures still), it provides shelter and other basic necessities for humans as well. In fact, because it was believed to be a spiritual tree, humans performed rituals to ask permission to use the tree in this way. It is an excellent example of the interdependence among humans, animals and plants/nature.
It is with great admiration and respect that we modeled the design of our hospital after this great tree. We strive to live up to the role of the Kapok Tree by supporting the human animal bond and acknowledging the interdependence among humans, animals and nature.
